Put yourself in a casting director’s shoes:
You’re casting for a big movie. You’ve got the leads but there are still some smaller, yet important roles, to cast. You need to make sure you pick someone who suits the role and who can act well.
You have hundreds – often thousands – of applications to go through.
If you need to make sure you cast someone who is a good actor, what is the easiest way to narrow down the applications? It’s to get rid of all of those who haven’t sent a showreel in.
You could argue that, if a casting director likes your ‘look’, then they might call you in for an audition on that alone. And while this is true in very rare situations, you’d have to have a very specific look for a very particular part. Casting directors are busy people and they have lots of good actors who are showing their skills off with a showreel. Why would they risk wasting their time on an audition for someone who may or may not be able to act?
